I've been away for 2 years, came back to all as it was. But I cannot buy any craft goods, which means I cannot get fuel, of course. With a bit of luck I can buy an item of the top two ones (but not always). I suppose it could be because I've been dropped of the community/friends list by people for not playing - but I seem to recall it happened before I stopped as well.

What you are describing generally means there is a problem with the person's farm from whom you are trying to buy. Try skipping the first few people and see if that helps. Try to buy from someone you know has a working farm. If that doesn't help contact Customer Support from the tab at the top of your farm. Good luck.
Thanks! I thought of that as well, and I just deleted all the people (only 16) that were left, so it seems fine, just slowly adding (community) neighbours who hopefully craft goods!
Hmm, I do not have a Customer Support link below my farm at all - how do I access support? It's still not working right, I have neighbours (when sending for things) that are no longer in my neighbours list. I ave 220+ neighbours, but only 8 seem to craft (even from recently added community neighbours). Something's not quite right.
