New Presidential Challenge for Advanced Public Lighting Promotes LED

The challenge implements a public lighting(CLASSIC)

accelerator that focuses on overcoming obstacles faced by state and local governments to upgrade more efficient lighting technologies for its streets, parking facilities, and entertainment areas.

The public lighting accelerator is part of the Better Buildings Initiative of the Department of Energy (DOE). As early as 2012, the government realized that commercial buildings used $200 billion in energy, 30% of which was wasted due to inefficiency, and the government began to assist in the transition to newer technologies. The goal is to improve US energy security, make the country more competitive and create jobs on a global scale. Initially, the public lighting goal was 500,000 LED poles. This latest push has brought the goal to 1.5 million in just two years.

The government is committed to leading by example, upgrading federal facilities and connecting with other departments through multiple channels. These include better building alliances, parking lighting energy efficiency (LEEP) activities, and outdoor lighting accelerator partnerships. These ultimately provide resources and recognition for LED public lighting projects.
